Over the past decade, Pilates has gained immense popularity in the fitness world. It has become a favorite exercise technique among individuals ranging from footballers to dancers, all of whom attest to its physical and mental benefits.

Joseph Pilates conceived this method in the early 20th century to rehabilitate WWI soldiers. The yoga-like movements he developed were later adapted for dancers, eventually evolving into the modern-day practice still widely embraced today.

Although purists advocate for teaching Pilates in its unmodified form, various branches have emerged while staying true to the fundamental principles of breath control, focus, and fluidity of movement. The primary differences among these styles lie in the sequencing of exercises, the incorporation of props, and the targeted areas of the body.

Next, inhale and reach your arms forward. Exhale and extend your arms upward, then roll your spine back down. If you are new to this exercise, you can start by keeping both feet on the floor with your knees bent and hip-width apart before progressing to the advanced version. Repeat this sequence three to five times.

Lie down and lift your shoulders off the floor. Extend your legs upward, aiming to touch them above the knees. Inhale for two counts, then exhale as you bring one leg toward your body while simultaneously lowering the other leg just above the mat.

Inhale again, bringing both legs back toward the ceiling, allowing them to pass each other in mid-air. Exhale as you lower the opposite leg. Repeat this movement eight to ten times.

Side Bend

Assume a supine position with your shoulders raised off the floor. Bring your legs together and upward, bending your knees and pointing your toes. Place your hands behind your head and inhale. As you exhale, extend one leg outward with pointed toes while simultaneously rotating your upper body toward the flexed knee, aligning your bent elbow with your knee.

Begin in a plank position, ensuring your weight is distributed on the balls of your feet and your arms are aligned with your shoulders. Inhale as you lift one foot off the ground, raising your leg behind you.

Exhale as you shift your body backward, pointing your toes and keeping your hips level and square. Inhale again, shifting your body forward while relaxing your raised ankle. Lower your leg back down to the mat. Perform three to six repetitions on each side.
